| May 1999 is a music group that was founded 1986 by Alioune Gueye from senegal, West
Africa. The music unites traditional rhythm with western sounds to the so called
Afro-Moderne. The group consists of musicians, who are from all over the world. This
truely international group uses the percussion instruments Sabar - which is closely
related to the family of the drums - and Bougarabou - which is similar to the Congas.
The repertoire centers around themes
from natur and the human being in our society. The tree thus becomes the symbol for live.
Most of the songs deal with the strong wish for peace between mankind and against the
egoism in our every-day-life and optimistically looking forward to the future. The music
tries to bring these messages by the harminic sound of drums, percussion, bass-guitar,
guitar and keyboards and saxofon.
The harminic team-work of the musicians
bring these messages in texts in Senegal's native language Wolof, in English and in
French.
